About “Tanbih al-Ghabi bi-Tabri'at Ibn 'Arabi”

Tanbih al-Ghabi bi-Tabri'at Ibn 'Arabi is a booklet written by the Shafi'i-Ash'ari scholar Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti. It was written as a response to the book Tanbih al-Ghabi ila Takfir Ibn 'Arabi by Burhan al-Din al-Biqa'i. Al-Suyuti defended Ibn 'Arabi against accusations of heresy and unbelief made by al-Biqa'i. He noted that scholars have had differing opinions about Ibn 'Arabi. Some, like Ibn 'Ata' Allah al-Sakandari and 'Afif al-Din al-Yafi'i, considered him a wali of Allah. Others, including many jurists, saw him as a heretic. Some, like al-Dhahabi, expressed doubts. Two opposing verdicts were reported from Shaykh 'Izz al-Din ibn 'Abd al-Salam. According to Shaykh Taj al-Din ibn 'Ata' Allah, Shaykh 'Izz al-Din initially judged Sufis quickly, but later changed his view. After Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili returned from pilgrimage, he greeted Shaykh 'Izz al-Din, who then humbled himself and began attending al-Shadhili's gatherings.
