About “The awkward age”
Nanda Brookenham is coming out into London society and is thrust into the vicious, immoral circle around her mother, finding herself in competition with Mrs. Brookenham for the affection of a man she admires. First published serially in Harper's Weekly in 1898-99 and as a book in 1899, it presents the story almost entirely in dialogue, expanding from a light story of a young girl's coming of age into a treatment of decadence in English fin de siècle life.
