About “The "Bab" Ballads, Much Sound and Little Sense”
The Bab Ballads is a collection of light verse by W. S. Gilbert, who also created the accompanying comic drawings. The poems are named after his childhood nickname, and he later signed his illustrations with the name "Bab." Gilbert developed his "topsy-turvy" style in these verses, using absurd premises and exploring their logical outcomes for humor. The ballads reflect his cynical and satirical sense of humor. Most of the poems were written by Gilbert, who first published them in book form before gaining fame for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan.
