About “The Book of the Courtier”
The Book of the Courtier by Baldassare Castiglione is a philosophical dialogue exploring the qualities of an ideal courtier or court lady who can advise a prince or political leader. Set in the Duchy of Urbino, the work was inspired by Castiglione’s experiences as an ambassador and courtier. It became a popular text and was often grouped with other courtesy books that addressed etiquette, self-presentation, and morals in noble courts. These include Il Galateo by Giovanni Della Casa and The Civil Conversation by Stefano Guazzo. While often seen as a guide to courtly behavior, the book also functions as a dramatic dialogue, an open philosophical discussion, and an essay. Some readers have interpreted it as a political allegory. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
