About “The butcher boy”

Francie Brady, known as the "pig boy," grows up in a poor Irish town in the early 1960s. He is influenced by comic books, Flash Bars, and the TV show Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. He dreams of earning the "Francie Brady Not A Bad Bastard Anymore Diploma," but faces challenges including his mother being sent to a mental institution, his father's alcoholism, and being abandoned by others. The novel The Butcher Boy by Patrick McCabe was nominated for and won major literary prizes. The book was also adapted into a play titled Frank Pig Says Hello, which was staged in Dublin and is set for a production at London's Royal Court theater.
