About “The cabala”
In Thornton Wilder's first novel, The Cabala (1926), Samuele, an American student, spends a year in post-World War I Rome, immersed in the decadent world of a secret community known as a "cabala." This group consists of decaying European royalty, eccentric expatriate Americans, and a great cardinal of the Roman Church, whom Samuele perceives as vestigial representatives of the gods and goddesses of Ancient Rome.
