About “The Cathedral”
The Cathedral is a 1968 novel by Oles Honchar that became his most famous work. It was initially well received and popular among students but later faced criticism from the Brezhnev regime. A group of literature students defended the novel, leading to surveillance and reprisals by the KGB. A planned Russian translation was halted, and the Ukrainian edition was withdrawn. The novel's title refers to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Samar, Ukraine. A Russian translation was published in 1987, and an English translation was released in 1989 by the St. Sophia Religious Association of Ukrainian Catholics.
