The Changeling is an English Renaissance tragedy written by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley, first published in 1653. The play follows Beatrice-Joanna, who is betrothed to Alonzo but in love with Alsemero. She persuades De Flores, who is in love with her, to kill Alonzo so she can be with Alsemero. A separate comic subplot involves Isabella, the young wife of Alibius, who is pursued by Franciscus and Antonio. These men pretend to be madmen to gain access to her. The play combines elements of tragedy and comedy, reflecting the complexity of human desire and deception.
