About “The Chaos”
"The Chaos" is a poem that highlights the irregularity of English spelling and pronunciation. Written by Gerard Nolst Trenité, a Dutch writer, traveller, and teacher, under the pseudonym Charivarius, it contains around 800 examples of irregular spellings. The first version, consisting of 146 lines, was published in 1920 as an appendix to his textbook Drop Your Foreign Accent: engelsche uitspraakoefeningen. A more complete version, published by the Spelling Society in 1993–94, has 274 lines and is considered the most comprehensive and authoritative version of the poem.
