About “The chase”
Rosamond Vivian, a young girl living with her bitter grandfather, yearns for excitement and is charmed when Phillip Tempest, nearly twice her age and clearly "not a saint," pays a visit. She marries him a month later, believing she might change him with her love, not knowing how she'll pay for the decision. The plot is Faustian, with recurring references to Mephistopheles.
