Martin Boyne, a bachelor in his forties, befriends a group of seven Wheater stepbrothers and sisters during a cruise ship journey between Algiers and Venice. The children, weary of being shuttled between their parents, are united by their eldest sister Judith, who acts as their protector, and their interactions with Boyne and other passengers, including the flamboyant Marchioness of Wrench and the vivacious Judith Wheater, unfold within a narrative that explores familial discord and the social customs of Americans abroad.
