About “The Color Purple”

The Color Purple is a 1982 novel by Alice Walker that won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction. It is an epistolary work, told through letters. The book has faced censorship and was listed as the seventeenth most frequently challenged book between 2000 and 2009 due to its explicit content, including depictions of violence. In 2003, it was named among the UK's best-loved novels in the BBC's The Big Read poll. The novel is part of a collection that includes The Third Life of Grange Copeland and Meridian.
