Dillon, an American gangster who had been out of the rackets, returns to criminal activity with ambition and violence, seeking a fresh start through the use of others. He recruits small-time operators like Nick Gurney and Roxy, as well as Myra, the daughter of a boxer, and Hurst, a big-time racketeer, to aid his ascent, but the situation deteriorates as the consequences of his actions unfold.
