About “The Devil's Elixirs”
The Devil's Elixirs is an 1815 novel by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The novel's basic idea was inspired by Matthew Gregory Lewis's The Monk, which is referenced in the text. However, Hoffmann's portrayal of a fallen monk explored the human psyche more deeply than Lewis's work. This approach was praised by the German poet and critic Heinrich Heine, who considered Hoffmann's treatment superior. Additionally, storylines from plays by Pedro Calderon and Heinrich von Kleist, which Hoffmann directed in 1811, also influenced the novel. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
