About “The Devil”
"The Devil" is a novella by Leo Tolstoy. It was written in 1889 and received an alternative ending in 1909. It was published only after Tolstoy's death, in 1911. The story explores the effects of sexual emotion, similar to Tolstoy's other work, The Kreutzer Sonata, which was written around the same time. Both works examine the emotional and moral consequences of desire. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
