About “The Elephant Man”
The Elephant Man is a play written by Bernard Pomerance. It premiered in 1977 at the Nuffield Studio in Lancaster and later moved to the Hampstead Theatre in London. Directed by Roland Rees, the production featured the original cast and was later remounted at the National Theatre in 1980. The play transferred to New York in 1979, first playing off-Broadway at The Theatre of St. Peter's and then moving to the Booth Theatre on Broadway. David Bowie took over the lead role of Merrick in 1980. The play ran for 916 performances and closed in 1981. It was revived in 2002 and 2014. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
