About “The fortunate pilgrim”

Lucia Santa leaves her home in the mountain farms of Italy and travels three thousand miles across the ocean to New York, seeking a better life. Instead, she ends up in Hell's Kitchen, where she is stuck in a bad marriage and must raise six children alone. As she tries to keep her family together, her daughter faces the challenges of work and romance in the adult world. Her eldest son becomes involved with the mafia, while her youngest son dreams of American opportunities that Lucia does not fully understand. The story follows the struggles of a family navigating a new country and its dangers.
