The book is a semi-fictional travelogue in which four figures—Myself, Grizzlebeard, the Sailor, and the Poet—walk from the east end to the west end of the County of Sussex over five days in 1902, including All-Halloween, All-Hallows’ Day, and the Day of the Dead. They engage in storytelling, singing, feasting, and philosophical discourse, discussing topics such as St. Dunstan and the Devil, the nature of animal hair, the Pelagian Heresy, inns and ale, and the relationship between the land and its people.
