About “The Freedom Writers Diary”
The Freedom Writers Diary is a non-fiction book published in 1999. It was written by a group of 150 students from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, and their teacher, Erin Gruwell. The book details how the students used writing to share their personal experiences and overcome challenges. It later inspired the 2007 movie Freedom Writers, which was starring Hilary Swank.
