About “The Girl Who Played Go”
In a remote Manchurian town in the 1930s, a sixteen-year-old girl is caught between her growing awareness of womanhood and the tensions between her people and Japanese occupiers. She takes a lover, a dissident student, but becomes disillusioned by adult life. Her only true passion is the ancient game of go, in which she excels despite her age and gender. She faces a challenge from a mysterious stranger, who is later revealed to be a Japanese soldier in disguise. They play go for days, deeply engaged but rarely speaking. As the war intensifies and their lives change, they focus only on the game, each move bringing them closer to a devastating fate. The Girl Who Played Go is a 2001 novel by Shan Sa that explores themes of love, cruelty, and loss of innocence.
