About “The God of Small Things”

The God of Small Things is the debut novel by Indian writer Arundhati Roy. It follows the childhood of fraternal twins whose lives are shaped and ultimately destroyed by the "Love Laws" that dictate who should be loved, how, and to what extent. The story examines how small details influence people's actions and relationships. It also critiques casteism, a deep-rooted form of discrimination in India. The novel was published in 1997 and won the Booker Prize that year.
