About “The Green Child”
The Green Child is the only completed novel by Herbert Edward Read, an English anarchist poet and critic. Written in 1934 and published in 1935 by Heinemann, the story draws from the 12th-century legend of two green children who appeared in the English village of Woolpit, speaking an unknown language. Read had previously described this legend in his 1931 work English Prose Style as a model for fantasy. The novel is based on this historical tale and reflects Read’s interest in imaginative literature. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
