*The Green Child* is the only completed novel by Herbert Edward Read, an English anarchist poet and critic. Written in 1934 and published in 1935 by Heinemann, the story draws from the 12th-century legend of two green children who appeared in the English village of Woolpit, speaking an unknown language. Read had previously described this legend in his 1931 work *English Prose Style* as a model for fantasy.
