About “The Help”

In 1962, Mississippi, three women from different backgrounds come together in a small town. Skeeter, a young woman returning home after college, is pressured to marry, but her relationship with her childhood maid, Constantine, has been disrupted by her disappearance. Aibileen, a Black maid raising her seventeenth white child, is affected by the death of her son, which her employers ignored. Minny, Aibileen's friend, is a talented cook with a sharp tongue who loses her job and finds work with a new woman in town. Despite their differences, the women join forces for a secret project that challenges the rigid social boundaries of their time. Their efforts reflect a desire to break free from the constraints of their society and create change. The novel explores themes of friendship, courage, and the power of women to challenge the status quo.
