The book is a mystery novel featuring Flavia di Stefano, newlywed and head of the Italian art theft squad, who becomes involved in the theft of a painting borrowed from the Louvre and en route to a celebratory exhibition. Her husband, art historian Jonathan Argyll, investigates the history of a small Renaissance painting, an Immaculate Conception, owned by Flavia's mentor, retired general Taddeo Bottando, leading both to uncover secrets that shift Flavia's investigation from recovering stolen art to uncovering a murder.
