About “The Infernal Machine”
The Infernal Machine, or La Machine Infernale, is a play written by French dramatist Jean Cocteau, inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Oedipus. It premiered on 10 April 1934, at the Théâtre Louis-Jouvet in Paris, directed by Louis Jouvet, with costumes and set design by Christian Bérard. The play was later translated by Albert Bermel and first performed in New York on 3 February 1958, at the Phoenix Theatre.
