The invention of wings follows Hetty "Handful" Grimké, an enslaved girl in early nineteenth century Charleston, and Sarah Grimké, the daughter of a wealthy family, from the time Sarah turns eleven and is given ownership of Hetty as her handmaid. Over the next thirty-five years, the two women navigate lives shaped by the constraints of slavery, gender, and societal expectations, experiencing loss, defiance, and personal transformation as they seek autonomy and selfhood.
