The story follows Gregory Sallust, who joins the service of the lady A-lu-te and embarks on a quest with the companions Kâo Hsuan and Mandarin Tsai-Ping to locate the lost heir to the Imperial Throne of China. Their journey spans from the South Seas to San Francisco's Chinatown, across the Pacific, through China, and to the borders of Mongolia, involving numerous dangers and fatalities before they confront the man believed to hold the lost Princess in the great House of Lin.
