The Jingde Record of the Transmission of the Lamp is a 30-volume work that contains biographies of Chan and Zen Buddhist patriarchs and other notable monks. It was created during the Song dynasty by Shi Daoyuan. The text includes "encounter dialogues," which are early examples of the dialogues that later developed into kōan stories.
