About “The Labyrinth of Solitude”
The Labyrinth of Solitude is a 1950 essay by Mexican poet Octavio Paz. It contains nine parts exploring themes of Mexican identity, including topics such as the Pachuco, Mexican masks, the Day of the Dead, and the conquest of Mexico. The essays examine the feeling of solitude as a central aspect of human existence. Paz argues that solitude is a fundamental part of being human, as people are the only beings aware of their loneliness and seek connection. He suggests that human nature involves a longing for communion, yet awareness of self brings awareness of separation. After 1975, some editions added a three-part essay called "Posdata," which addresses the 1968 student massacre in Mexico.
