About “The Languages of Africa”
The Languages of Africa is a 1963 non-fiction book by linguist Joseph Greenberg. It presents a genetic classification of African languages, which remains widely used today with some modifications. The book is an expanded and revised version of Greenberg’s 1955 work Studies in African Linguistic Classification, a collection of eight articles he published between 1949 and 1954 in the Southwestern Journal of Anthropology. It was first published in 1963 as Part II of the International Journal of American Linguistics, Volume 29, Number 1. A second edition in 1966 made it an independent publication, and this version is more frequently cited. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
