The book follows Johannes Verne, a young man abandoned to die by his vengeful grandfather, who is rescued by outlaws and raised in part by the Indians of the desert. Verne grows into a rugged adventurer influenced by the love of two women, Miss Nesselrode and Meghan, and becomes a man capable of claiming a place in the early-day Los Angeles world of opportunity.
