About “The Manuscript Found in Saragossa”
A novel by Jan Potocki follows a French army officer as he travels after the siege of Saragossa, encountering supernatural events through a series of tales. According to the preface by Roger Caillois, the work was first published in St. Petersburg around 1804 by Potocki, a Polish writer. Parts of the work were later published in Paris in 1893, and a French version was published in Polish in 1847. Additional sections of the French version were discovered in Cracow around 1956. This version uses the St. Petersburg text and excludes the newly found fragments. The stories include elements of illusion, fantasy, and mystery. The narrator, an officer, struggles to distinguish reality from the strange events he experiences. The tales feature death, spirits, phantoms, and other supernatural elements. Some stories are connected by a loose thread. A film adaptation exists and is available on YouTube in Polish, with some versions including English subtitles.
