The Margarets is a science fiction novel that follows the story of Margaret Bain, the only human child in a work colony on Phobos, who creates six imaginary companions to cope with isolation. After returning to Earth and growing into adulthood on a depleted planet where humanity survives through trade in slaves, Margaret must reunite the six versions of herself—each having developed independently across the universe—as part of a long-term survival plan for her species.
