The Martian is a 2011 science fiction novel written by Andy Weir. It was his first novel under his own name and was initially self-published. The book was later acquired by Crown Publishing, which re-released it in 2014. The story follows Mark Watney, an American astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars in 2035. Trapped after a mission gone wrong, he uses his knowledge and resourcefulness to find ways to survive. The novel focuses on his efforts to stay alive while waiting for rescue.
