In 1869, Dostoevsky was called from Germany to St. Petersburg after the death of his stepson. The novel by J. M. Coetzee explores Dostoevsky's obsessive search for the truth about his stepson's death. He tries to determine if his stepson committed suicide or was murdered, and whether he loved or hated him. The story is set in pre-revolutionary Russia and blends mystery with deep reflections on authority, rebellion, art, and imagination.
