About “The mystery of the Trinity”

The Four Books of Sentences, written by Peter Lombard in the 12th century, is a theological compilation that gathers authoritative statements on biblical passages. It was created around 1150 and built upon earlier glosses—explanations of biblical texts by scholars. These glosses were often placed in the margins or between lines of the text. Lombard collected material from Scripture, Augustine of Hippo, and other Church Fathers, organizing it into four books with chapters. Later, Alexander of Hales grouped the chapters into distinctions, making the work a standard theological textbook during the high and late Middle Ages. Students needed to write a commentary on the Sentences to earn a master's degree. The work influenced major thinkers like Aquinas and Ockham, who provided their own interpretations, as Lombard left many questions unresolved.
