About “The Orphanage”
The Orphanage is a 2017 novel by Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan. Published by Meridian Czernowitz in Chernivtsi, the story follows a schoolteacher who travels through the warzone of the War in Donbas to retrieve his nephew from an orphanage. An English translation by Reilly Costigan-Humes and Isaac Stackhouse Wheeler was released by Yale University Press in 2021. The translation received the EBRD Literature Prize in 2022.
