About “The Rape of Lucrece”
The Rape of Lucrece (1594) is a narrative poem by William Shakespeare based on the story of the Roman noblewoman Lucretia. It follows Shakespeare’s earlier poem Venus and Adonis (1593), which included a dedicatory letter to the Earl of Southampton. In that letter, Shakespeare promised to write a "graver labour," and The Rape of Lucrece reflects this promise with its serious and somber tone. The poem focuses on the tragic tale of Lucretia, emphasizing themes of honor, virtue, and violence. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
