About “The rector and the doctor's family”

The Rector tells the story of an Oxford scholar in holy orders who begins parish ministry in middle age and confronts personal inadequacies brought to light by the demands of the role. The Doctor’s Family centers on Dr. Rider, an unexceptional young medical man whose life is threatened by the arrival of his dissolute older brother Fred and Fred’s family, including Fred’s sister-in-law, who claims Dr. Rider’s attention in unexpected ways.
