About “The Satanic Verses”

The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdie's fourth novel, published on September 26, 1988. It draws inspiration from the life of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and incorporates elements of magical realism. The title refers to the "satanic verses," a set of Quranic verses that mention three Meccan goddesses. Rushdie based this part of the story on historical accounts by al-Waqidi and al-Tabari. The novel was well-received in the United Kingdom, earning a place as a 1988 Booker Prize finalist and winning the 1988 Whitbread Award for novel of the year.
