The shoemaker's holiday is a play in five acts that follows Rowland Lacy, a young nobleman who disguises himself as a Dutch shoemaker named Hans to win the affection of Rose Oateley, daughter of Sir Roger. Through his guise as Hans, he works in a shop with Simon Eyre, who gains fortune and political advancement, eventually becoming sheriff and then Lord Mayor of London, where he declares a shoemakers' holiday to celebrate all apprentices.
