About “The Spirit of Law”
The Spirit of Law is a 1748 treatise on political theory and a pioneering work in comparative law by Montesquieu. It was first published anonymously, as was common at the time. The work was translated into other languages quickly, which helped spread its influence beyond France. An English translation by Thomas Nugent was published in 1750 and went through many revisions and editions. In 1751, the Roman Catholic Church added the book to its list of prohibited works. The treatise was written by Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de Montesquieu. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
