The book is a memoir detailing J. R. Moehringer's upbringing in New York, where he sought the voice of his missing father, a disc jockey, through a battered clock radio. As a boy, he found guidance and a sense of belonging in the bar on the corner, where a diverse group of men, including Uncle Charlie, Colt, Joey D, and Cager, offered him a form of fatherhood and taught him about identity and masculinity.
