About “The theory of moral sentiments”
The Theory of Moral Sentiments is Adam Smith’s first book and the work he considered most important. In it, he explores how people determine right and wrong through the concept of the impartial spectator, a hypothetical observer who judges actions without self-interest. Smith suggests that people naturally act in their self-interest, which values independence and self-control. However, society is also held together by sympathy, the ability to share the emotions and physical sensations of others. This natural sympathy leads people to seek the happiness of others and avoid their suffering, fostering social bonds and mutual approval.
