The Tragedy of Mariam, the Fair Queen of Jewry is a Jacobean-era drama written by Elizabeth Cary, Viscountess Falkland, and first published in 1613. It is considered the first extant original play written by a woman in English. The play focuses on the historical figure Mariamne, who was married to King Herod. There is some speculation that Cary may have written an earlier play that is now lost, but The Tragedy of Mariam remains the first known English play to explore the history of Herod's marriage to Mariamne in detail.
