Juan Pablo Castel is a tormented and insane painter who falls for Maria, a woman he meets at an art exhibition. Maria is married to a blind man, a figure central to the works of Sabato and Saramago, and she lives in a countryside house. She is also involved in an affair with her cousin. Castel becomes consumed by jealousy after discovering these secrets, but the novel offers no clear truth, as all events are filtered through his unstable mind.
