About “The Twelve Chairs”
Ostap Bender, an unemployed con artist in postrevolutionary Soviet Russia, joins Ippolit Matveyevich Vorobyaninov, a former nobleman searching for jewels hidden in chairs appropriated by Soviet authorities. Their search takes them from the provinces to Moscow to Soviet Georgia and the Trans-Caucasus mountains, encountering opportunistic bureaucrats and aging survivors of the prerevolutionary propertied classes.
