About “The Village”
The Village is a short novel by Ivan Bunin, a Nobel Prize-winning Russian author. Written in 1909 and first published in 1910, it was titled Novelet when it appeared in the magazine Sovremenny Mir. The story is set during the 1905 Revolution and takes place in Bunin's birthplace. It follows two peasant brothers, one a drunk and a brute, the other a more gentle and sympathetic figure. The novel caused controversy due to its realistic depiction of rural life, which contrasted with the idealized portrayals of peasants common in Russian literature at the time. Some characters were seen as offensive, with descriptions suggesting they lacked typical human intelligence. The work is now considered Bunin's first major achievement.
