About “The Visit of the Royal Physician”
The Visit of the Royal Physician is a 1999 novel by Swedish author Per Olov Enquist. It was published in the United States as The Royal Physician's Visit, translated by Tiina Nunnally. The story is set in the 18th century during a time of political change and intellectual awakening. It focuses on the court of Denmark’s King Christian VII, who was mentally ill, and the relationship between the king’s physician, Johann Friedrich Struensee, and Queen Caroline Mathilde.
