The Vortex is a play that centers on Florence Lancaster, an ageing social beauty and serial adulteress who takes young lovers, and her son Nicky, who returns from Paris with his fiancée Bunty and a serious drug addiction. As both mother and son exhibit increasing instability and are abandoned by their lovers, the play shifts from a superficial comedy to a dramatic exploration of personal and moral decay.
